Here’s a look at the ice-making process.

The water is supplied to the ice maker through 1/4″ supply lines that run from the fridge. The line carries the water to the thermostat-controlled refrigerator. The water is directed to the fill valve which then sends it to a mechanical ice maker. The water here is turned into ice.

A thermostat inside the refrigerator will shut off once the water has frozen. Once the temperature is raised, the cubes are easily released from the mold. This small motor rotates the arm that pushes the ice cubes from the mold into the bin. Once the ice has been dispersed, the cycle is repeated. When ice does not collect, it will lift a bail-wire to turn off the system until the ice levels are low enough to start the cycle again.

If you are having problems with the machine making too much ice, you should follow these troubleshooting steps to find out what is causing it.

The arm should extend to the machine. Check the arm that extends to the machine. The machine is turned on when the arm is horizontal. To check the shut-off, you may have to remove your ice bucket. You should also check the position where your machine is turned on and off.

Set the temperature of your freezer to 50oF (or lower). The thermostat should be adjusted if not. Use a cooking temperature gauge in a container of oil to freeze if you don’t know the exact settings. Cooking oil won’t freeze, but you can get an accurate thermometer reading by leaving it there longer than two hours. The thermometer may need to be adjusted if it does not read the same temperature as the freezer thermometer.

Next, you’ll need to unplug and then move the refrigerator to reach the water line. By turning off the water supply valve, you can turn off your ice maker. Removing the line, turning on the supply valve and checking the consistency of the water flow. Water that is released should be collected in a container.

Check the valve. Insert a small flathead screwdriver and remove the inlet filter. Check for debris to see if it is blocking water from flowing through. Then flush the system with cold, running water.

If the water is frozen, use a hair dryer to thaw it. Use a heat source like a blow dryer to melt the frozen water. Simple.

Reconnect all lines disconnected before pushing the refrigerator to the original position. Replacing the ice container and waiting 24 hours will allow you to determine if it is functioning properly.
